The USS KIDD Veterans Museum will be hosting its annual Fall Field Days aboard  the KIDD from Thursday, Oct. 27 - Sunday, Oct. 30.

Approximately 30 veterans  and volunteers from around the country are arriving in Baton Rouge to assist in  the restoration and preservation of the USS KIDD (DD-661), which is considered  the 'gold standard' in ship restorations by the Historic Naval Ships Association  fleet members. "The camaraderie between  people with similar experiences is what I enjoy most about KIDD's Fall Field  Days, said Dan Katze, who flew in from Loveland, CO. "It feels good to help  preserve this amazing ship," who served on the USS Purdy (DD-734) as a Radioman  2nd Class.   The work that these  volunteers provide the KIDD in just three days' time is of enormous value to a  non-profit organization that survives on self-generated funds. In 2014, these  incredible volunteers provided an estimated $45,000 worth of skilled and  unskilled labor.
"I love the smell of Navy  ships," said Frank Remkiewicz of Sarasota, FL. "Paint, steel, and preservative.  The smell of a Navy ship is the closest thing to going home for me." "The great thing about the  Field Days is not just the work accomplished on our behalf…it's the people,"  said USS KIDD Ship Superintendent Tim NesSmith. "I learn how the ship worked  from the men themselves, not just a manual. The ship truly comes alive with a  crew aboard."

Albertson's Market Store #  2750, Walgreens Store #9518, Cutrer's Slaughterhouse, Frito Lay, Baton Rouge  Coca Cola, Flower's Bakery and Day's Smokehouse have all partnered with the KIDD  this year to help aid in maintaining a low cost for this exceptional  program.

'The strong coffee and  quarter-inch mattresses are the best part," joked Katze. "Everyone should come  out and enjoy this unique experience."
