The USS KIDD Veterans Museum is proud to announce that it will begin facilitating an initiative started by a local hair stylist with a passion for social change and a heart for those living on the streets of our community. KIDD will begin facilitate free haircuts for homeless living in the area through its support of 'The Giving Project USA' in the month of June. “The idea behind ‘The Giving Project USA’ that my friend and fellow stylist Kara Richard and I developed is to inspire people to use the skills God gave us to give back to those in need,” said Kara Chiasson, local stylist. “It allows us to show compassion and love to people who may not feel those things on a daily basis.” According to Randy Nichols with the Capitol Area Alliance for the Homeless, there are more than 900 homeless people living in Baton Rouge at any given time. Temperatures in the capitol region can reach 100 degrees or more during the summer months and if you’re living on the street, haircuts are not a commodity you can afford.
“We’re thrilled to be able support such a great initiative,” said USS KIDD Executive Director Alejandra Juan. “The Giving Project ties well into KIDD’s mission which focuses on education, information and advocacy. We are proud to help support this incredibly needed movement and hope that it will inspire other young professionals to give back to our community.” Haircuts will be offered in the museum’s administrative offices in order to provide privacy for those in need. Bag lunches will be offered to those receiving a haircut.
